E

ver since our Lost in Translation-inspired expedition to Japan in 2019, we have been dreaming about going back. This November we are finally returning and inviting a small group to experience Tokyo and Kamakura through local eyes.

Together with our friend Mayu, a third-generation Japanese surfer born and raised in Kamakura, we will spend a week exploring her hometown and favourite surf breaks.

Just as New Yorkers escape to Montauk at the far end of Long Island, Tokyo locals have long headed south in search of waves, ocean air and a slower pace of life.

For centuries, pilgrims have made the same journey to Kamakura in search of something else entirely. As the historical home of Japanese Zen Buddhism, the town has long attracted seekers, surfers, craftsmen, creatives and ocean lovers alike. Despite its proximity to one of the largest cities on earth, Kamakura somehow feels a world away.

Mornings begin with coffee and surf checks. Afternoons drift between hidden temples, tiny side streets and long lunches. Evenings often end squeezed into small izakayas.

A locally owned Japanese surf house will be our home for the week, walking distance from the beach, cafés and temples.

At some point during the week we will trade the ocean for city streets and venture back into Tokyo. One of the world’s most fascinating cities and the perfect contrast to the slower rhythm of Kamakura.

Our Surf & Zen Extravaganza includes accommodation, two surf sessions per day, surf coaching, surfboard & wetsuit, all transportation within Japan, temples, onsens (hot springs), a visit to one of Japan’s most renowned surfboard shapers, and a week spent exploring alongside Peter, Jens & Mayu.

Some things can be planned.

The best parts rarely are.

Japan, Oh really?

SURF HOUSE
KAMAKURA STYLE

O

ur home for the week in Kamakura is a locally owned Japanese surf house. Simple, authentic and full of character.

Walking distance from the beach, cafés, temples and some of Kamakura’s favourite surf breaks, it is perfectly positioned for exploring both the coastline and the town itself.

Philosophy
Surfakademin is not the classroom. It’s the playground. A place where everyone gets to join in, regardless of experience, age or ability.

S

urfing is far more than a sport. It’s a lifestyle, a culture and, above all, a form of play.

In the same way, Surfakademin has never really been just a surf school, surf camp or surf course. It’s a week built around waves, adventure, friendship and the simple joy of spending long days by the ocean.

Here in Japan, Surfakademin founders and lifelong longboard enthusiasts Jens and Peter will be your hosts, coaches and surf companions throughout the week, sharing everything we have learned from three decades of chasing waves around the world. For those of you surfing for the very first time, we will be joined by a trusted local coaching crew who know these waves better than anyone.

Throughout the week we film and photograph selected sessions. A few laughs, a few revelations and the occasional breakthrough tend to follow. Seeing yourself surf is often the fastest way to improve, whether you’re catching your very first wave or refining a stylish noseride.

We also cover everything from surf etiquette and ocean safety to wave knowledge, surf history and the finer points of style. From understanding how waves are formed to navigating a crowded lineup with confidence.

F

or this special week at the end of November - SURF & ZEN EXTRAVAGANZA - Kamakura becomes our playground.

Some mornings begin with coffee and surf checks before paddling out at one of the area's many beach breaks. Other days take us further down the coast in search of waves, hidden corners and empty lineups.

But this journey extends far beyond surfing.

Throughout the week we will explore ancient temples, soak in traditional onsens, wander through quiet neighbourhoods, share meals in tiny local izakayas and spend time with the people who make Kamakura such a special place.

At some point we will trade the ocean for city streets and venture back into Tokyo, one of the world's most fascinating cities, before returning to the slower rhythm of life by the sea.

We will also visit one of Japan's most renowned surfboard shapers and gain a deeper understanding of the craftsmanship and culture that have shaped Japanese surfing for generations.

Throughout the week we will film selected surf sessions and offer individual feedback and coaching. A few small adjustments, a fresh perspective and plenty of time in the water tend to work wonders.

No two days are exactly alike. And that's exactly how we like it.

Detailed travel information will be provided upon booking.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

We strongly recommend making sure you have travel insurance in place before departure. Hopefully you’ll never need it, but it’s always nice to know someone has your back should a little hallaballo occur.
